Who We Are >> Our Staff >> Rev. Steve Fortenberry
Rev. Steve Fortenberry was born in Memphis and lived in Southaven, Mississippi as a child, but he grew up mainly in the Midwest.
Steve received his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Literature at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, where he also played on its varsity basketball team. After spending some time in youth ministry and helping his wife finish college, he then received his Masters of Divinity at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Upon graduating in 1994, he and his wife accepted a call to First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood and very much enjoyed their time working in youth ministry and living in Greenwood.
Upon leaving Greenwood, Steve served as Pastor of a mid-sized congregation in western Pennsylvania before accepting a call to start a new church in northeast Ohio, where he served for twelve years.
Steve likes to hunt and fish, and to do woodworking and handyman jobs around the house. Besides reading a lot of non-fiction in support of his ministry, he likes reading books by John Grisham, David Baldacci, and Marilynne Robinson. Through his former church’s work in agricultural ministry, Steve learned a lot about agriculture and food systems, though it is his wife who has the green thumb in the family.
His wife, Nancy, loves cooking, day trips, and gathering with friends. Since 1998, Nancy has been very active in a broad range of ministry. In the last couple of years, she ventured out of formal church employment by working for a lawyer and then an accountant. She is currently employed as a teacher at J. Z. George High School in Carrollton, Mississippi.
Steve and Nancy’s daughter, Sarah, was born in Greenwood in 1995 and is now a student at Delta State University studying the social sciences. Sarah is an avid reader and listener of music.
Their special needs son, James, attends J. Z. George High School in Carrollton. He's very active, friendly, and loves playing with trains and cars. Besides his fascination with wheeled toys, he loves riding his bike and getting rides on motorcycles, golf carts, and four-wheelers.
